A pure-blood Gryffindor, Animagus stag, and Harry’s father. Brilliant and arrogant at school, especially toward Snape, and brave at the end. He dies wandless in the hallway at Godric’s Hollow.

    James Potter is born

    James Potter is born on 27 March 1960. Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and Severus Snape are born the same year. Sirius was born the previous November.
  2. 1971

    The Marauders and Snape start Hogwarts

    Lily, James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter are sorted into Gryffindor. Snape is sorted into Slytherin. The Whomping Willow is planted so Lupin can be safely shut away.
  3. 1975

    The Marauders become Animagi

    By their fifth year James, Sirius, and Peter can become a stag, a dog, and a rat, so they can keep Lupin company. Lupin is a Gryffindor prefect.

    The Marauder’s Map

    James, Sirius, Remus, and Peter make a map of the castle that shows everyone in it. The exact year is not given. It is their work as students, most likely in the later 1970s.

    Percy’s year, and Sirius leaves home

    Percy Weasley, Oliver Wood, Viktor Krum, and Fleur Delacour are born around this time. Sirius runs away and is taken in by the Potters.

    The Marauders graduate; James and Lily marry

    James, Sirius, Remus, Peter, and Snape leave school. Snape and Pettigrew are among the Death Eaters. James and Lily marry. Fred and George Weasley are born on April Fools’ Day.

    Harry Potter is born

    Harry is born on 31 July 1980 at Godric’s Hollow.
  8. 1981-10-31

    James and Lily die; Voldemort falls

    Pettigrew has betrayed the secret. James dies in the hall. Lily refuses to stand aside, and the curse rebounds. Voldemort is torn from his body. A piece of soul attaches itself to Harry.
