Houses
The four Hogwarts houses, and the two visiting schools that appear in the Triwizard Tournament. Each page lists the people in this wiki who belong there.
- Gryffindor
Gryffindor is the Hogwarts house that prizes nerve. Godric Gryffindor wanted students who would act when it cost them something. The house colors are scarlet and gold. Its members turn up wherever the seven books put a fight: the chessboard under the trapdoor, Dumbledore’s Army, and the last defence of the castle. The Sorting Hat’s song treats courage as the house trait. The sword that presents itself to a worthy Gryffindor is the house’s oldest object, and it later destroys more than one Horcrux.
36 people - Hufflepuff
Hufflepuff takes the students the other founders might have ranked second. Helga Hufflepuff said she would teach the lot and treat them fairly, and the house still means patience, loyalty, and hard work rather than a talent for show. Cedric Diggory is the clearest example in the novels: a champion who shares a victory and is murdered for being in the way. The house’s relic, Helga’s cup, spends years as a Horcrux in the Lestrange vault.
10 people - Ravenclaw
Ravenclaw is the house for wit and a mind that would rather understand a problem than win an argument about it. Rowena Ravenclaw’s diadem was a device for wisdom until her daughter stole it and, much later, Tom Riddle turned it into a Horcrux and hid it in the Room of Requirement. Luna Lovegood is the house’s best-known student in these books: strange by the school’s measure, and right more often than the people who laugh at her.
14 people - Slytherin
Slytherin is ambition, cunning, and a founder’s blood prejudice that the books never tidy away. Salazar Slytherin built the Chamber of Secrets and left a basilisk for his heir. The heir, a thousand years later, is Tom Riddle. The house also holds people who refuse the script written for them: Severus Snape’s double life, Regulus Black’s theft of the locket, and Draco Malfoy lowering his wand in a burning room. Green and silver are the colors. The trait the Sorting Hat names is the will to get what you want.
20 people - Beauxbatons
Beauxbatons Academy of Magic is the French school that sends a champion to the Triwizard Tournament. In these books it arrives as a delegation, not as a second Hogwarts with four houses of its own. Fleur Delacour is the student the wiki follows: a champion, then Bill Weasley’s wife, and one of the people who hides Harry when the Ministry falls.
2 people - Durmstrang
Durmstrang is the northern school that also sends a champion. Its reputation in the novels is severity and a willingness to teach the Dark Arts as a subject. Viktor Krum is the student on the page: a famous seeker, a reluctant celebrity, and a champion who is used as cover by Barty Crouch Jr. The wiki does not invent a house system the books do not give.
