The mirror Sirius gives Harry

Sirius gives Harry a two-way mirror and tells him to use it if he needs him. Harry does not open it in time. A shard of it is how Aberforth watches him in the last book.

Setup

    Sirius hands Harry a package and says it is a way to contact him. Harry, afraid of drawing Sirius out of the house, never unwraps it. After Sirius dies, the unused gift is still among Harry’s things.

Payoff

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows · The shard, then the Hog’s Head

A fragment of the mirror shows a blue eye. Harry thinks it might be Dumbledore. It is Aberforth, who has the other mirror. The shard is how he knows when to send Dobby to Malfoy Manor, and how he sees Harry in the passage behind Ariana’s portrait.
